The political melting pot in Nevada is starting to thicken. The 2010 midterm election is drawing nearer, and the seat for Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid is among those becoming available. At one time, Nevada Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki was the most prominent and likely Republican prospect to challenge Reid. The current picture is looking somewhat different, though. As written about in “Brian Krolicki Requests Attorney General Disqualified” the once promising candidate has been mired in legal battles concerning the Nevada State College Savings Fund. Since then Krolicki’s name has been exposed repeatedly in the media along side others caught up in scandal. John Ensign’s recently coming clean about an affair with a campaign staffer is the most recent event to draw negative attention on the GOP.
Rather than solidifying the GOP bid to oust Harry Reid in 2010, it seems Krolicki’s Senatorial hopes are more likely to evaporate in the dry Nevada desert air. Competition in the form of other candidates, however, is growing steadily. Although still fairly small, the list of potentials looks like this (listed alphabetically):
Registered with the FEC (or formed official campaign committee)
Sharron Angle- Former State Assemblywoman for 4 terms
Brian Krolicki- Lt. Governor, Ex State Treasurer
Bill Parson- Former senior project manager, Nevada Test Site
Robin Titus- Physician
Not Registered with FEC and/or have not officially announced candidacy
Joe Heck- Former State Senator, Physician & Iraq War veteran
Dean Heller- US Congressman & Former Secretary of State
Mitt Romney- Former Massachusetts Governor, Former presidential candidate
John Chachas- International banker
R. Garn Maybey, Jr.- M.D., member of State Assembly
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has been alert and active in their own attempts to maintain the party majority in Washington. Back in late June they held a brunch at the Reno Ballroom. Dubbed the Washoe County Democratic Party 2009 Jefferson Jackson Brunch, the event was a “feel-good” pep rally lauding democratic principles. One of the speakers, Rory Reid (son of Harry Reid), current Clark County Commission Chair, lambasted Nevada’s Republican governor saying,
“Send Jim gibbons back to wherever he came from!”
With the Democratic Party’s current power in the legislature, and overall popularity with many voters, Nevada will need a squeaky clean candidate to topple Harry Reid in the 2010 election. We will be tracking Brian Krolicki’s along with any others that face Harry Reid in 2010.
