Reid Blocks E-Verify

Nevadans have reason to question Harry Reid’s true motivation for his past support of E-Verfy, an amendment to the Omnibus Appropriations bill offered by Jeff Sessions (R-AL). E-Verify protects United States citizens (or those legal to work in the U.S.) from losing precious jobs to illegal aliens by allowing employers to electronically verify social-security numbers.

In a letter to Nevada constituents Reid wrote: “I strongly support programs like E-Verify that are designed to ensure that employers only hire those who are legally authorized to work in the United States, and believe we need to strengthen enforcement against employers who knowingly hire individuals who are not authorized to work.” Apparently, back in 2006 and 2007 Reid even supported making e-Verify mandatory for all employers nationwide.

But doubts have arisen amongst Nevadans. Can the democratic Senate Majority Leader really be trusted to take a strong hand against the hiring of illegal immigrants when the need for jobs is at an all-time high? Unemployment in Nevada is currently around 9.4%.

A recent Reuters article led off this way: “If majority Leader Reid Supports E-Verify Why Does the Senate Block Its Long-Term Reauthorization?” A Zogby poll commissioned by FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) found that 83% of Nevadans support the reauthorization of E-Verify. Not surprising when the state boasts the dubious accolade of having the highest per-capita number of illegal residences in the nation. The poll also found that 78% of Nevadans support requiring company’s that receive federal stimulus money to use E-Verify. (www.fairus.org)

Has Harry Reid read the polls? During the House-Senate conference committee finalizing the economic stimulus package Harry Reid along with Nancy Pelosi stripped the E-Verify provisions from the final bill that was sent to president Obama.

“The fact that E-Verify will only receive a six-month reauthorization, and the fact that employers receiving taxpayer stimulus money are not required to verify workers are legal U.S. residents is not an oversight. It is a deliberate decision of the Senate leaders who place the interests of low wage employers and illegal aliens over the interests of millions of unemployed American workers who desperately need jobs.” Said Dan Stein, president of FAIR.

Nevada is a proud state, with a very diverse population. And yes, it is important to embrace with open arms those who come to Nevada in an honest attempt to better their lives. But there are already far too many legal residents without jobs, struggling to survive in what are extremely trying economic times. Harry Reid has just not shown he has the backbone to do what is necessary for Nevada. He is just unwilling to protect the jobs of legal workers. We need to come together and defeat Harry Reid in the 2010 election.

Well, what reasons has Senator Harry Reid given for blocking the E-Verify provision? Surely he has made a comment about this.

He gave reasons for approving it originally, as stated in the article. Why he flip-flopped and moved to block the measure is a mystery. Perhaps, his true motives would anathematize him in the eyes of the voters.

  • Reid is a Socialist Democrat. To maintain power he and other Socialist Democrats must continue to shore up and expand their power base through Political Gifts from the Public Treasury. This can be seen by the attempts to implement Amnesty for Illegals, as well as attempts to manipulate Bankruptcy courts in the case of Chrysler, to control the banking institutions, refusal to allow institutions receiving “loans” from TARP to pay back the loans, etc…

Time to give someone else the job of Nevada U.S. Senator. I am running for US Senate against Harry Reid and intend to replace him.
