Cap And Tax Crapped Out
Today the push by Nevada Senator Harry Reid to include the Cap-And-Trade carbon emissions tax as a budget reconciliation was rejected 67 to 33 in the Senate. Obama’s dream to slip in the controversial tax on carbon emissions will now require at least 60 votes. This is a minor victory for the country’s industrial centers that are constantly dodging blows from both California left-coast liberals and “enlightened” east coast democrats.
Under Cap-And-Trade, the government would sell carbon-dioxide credits to large corporations that are known to emit greenhouse gasses. Like sinners scrambling to buy indulgences from the church, corporations stockpile these emission credits as research allows them to reach a set carbon emissions target. Once below that target, they can sell the credits to other corporations.
This is just another example of environmental ideology spawning policy that costs taxpayers money, and why we need to beat Reid in the upcoming 2010 election. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Barrack Obama are trying to raise $646 billion from emission auctions to fund renewable energy projects. By playing into present-day propaganda over global warming to marshal support, Reid was hoping to squeeze the measure through by attaching it to the budget. And budgetary items only require a simple majority to pass.
Republicans call it “Cap and Tax”.
James Sensenbrenner R-WI said, “They seem to give people the impression that it’s going to be a huge environmentally free lunch. This lunch is not free.”
That’s for sure. As House Minority Leader John Boehner said,
“This proposal is going to cost the average family $3,100 dollars per year.” California Democratic Senator Henry Waxman wants to cut carbon emissions to 80% of 2005 levels by 2020. And by 2050, down to 20% of those levels.
But don’t worry. Nancy Pelosi is on the case and assures no one will suffer economically. “I will work to see that whatever we do does not increase the burden on rate payers and also has mitigation for business so we can be competitive.” I wonder how she’ll do that. Isn’t is somewhat contradictory to want to tax the hell out of companies-forcing them to pay for what they now do for free-AND show concern for “rate payers?”
We need to get rid of the improvident spendocrats like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to keep the Executive branch in check. We’ll have our chance in Nevada in 2010.
